Born in 1989, Frédéric Saulou lives and works in Rennes, France. A graduate in Space and Environmental Design from the Institut Supérieur des Arts Appliqués (2011) and in Object Design from the École Européenne Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Rennes (2013), he refined his practice at the Eric Gizard Associés agency and alongside designer Frédéric Ruyant before founding his independent, multidisciplinary studio in 2013. His work is rooted in research, experimentation, and a deep engagement with materials, treating each creation as a sculptural work balancing simplicity and technical precision. Saulou’s practice draws on a fascination with slate, ornamental stone, and the post-industrial heritage of local mineral materials, inspired by the verticality of architecture and the textures of the urban landscape. By reinterpreting traditional and industrial know-how in both formal and conceptual terms, he seeks to challenge the history, value, and conventional uses of these materials—transforming them into functional objects that act as both contemporary heritage and catalysts for reflection. Collaborating with local ateliers and prestigious brands such as Ligne Roset, Drugeot Manufacture, Brossier Saderne, Vista Alegre, and Esprit Porcelaine Limoges, Saulou continues to expand the possibilities of material expression in design, forging a dialogue between craft, industry, and the user.
