    Julian Mayor

Born 1976, United Kingdom. Lives and works in Doncaster, South Yorkshire.

Julian Mayor is a British artist and designer whose sculptural practice lies at the intersection of industrial precision and expressive form. Working primarily in welded sheet metal, Mayor fuses digital modelling with hands-on craftsmanship, creating works that oscillate between the mechanical and the organic. Each piece begins as a virtual construct—meticulously developed through 3D computer modelling—before being translated into tactile reality through cutting, folding, and welding in the artist’s studio. The result is a dynamic surface language where structure and distortion, geometry and imperfection, coalesce.

Mayor holds a BA in Industrial Design from the University of Northumbria (1998) and an MA in Design Products from the Royal College of Art (2000), where he studied under Ron Arad. His early career included design consultancy work in Northern California and collaborations with leading studios in London, including Pentagram and Tom Dixon. This cross-disciplinary background informs his approach to material, proportion, and spatial narrative.

Mayor’s work has been exhibited at major international institutions such as the Victoria & Albert Museum (London), the Museum of Arts and Design (New York), MUDAC (Lausanne), and Yorkshire Sculpture Park (UK). His public commissions include a series of permanent sculptural benches installed behind Tate Britain in Pimlico, London—testaments to his ability to merge artistic vision with civic engagement.

Exploring scale, light, and interaction, Mayor’s objects invite viewers into an evolving visual dialogue—monumental in presence yet intimate in tone. His process, akin to three-dimensional origami, transforms industrial material into poetic gesture, capturing both the precision of design and the unpredictability of the handmade.
