CONTAIN is a design studio founded by Mauricio Obarrio and Juan Peralta that brings together contemporary design, local craftsmanship, and industrial production. Rooted in Mallorca, the studio creates lighting and objects that explore the relationship between materiality, simplicity, and innovation.

Working closely with artisans and manufacturers, CONTAIN develops pieces distinguished by their refined forms, natural materials, and thoughtful functionality. Drawing inspiration from the island’s cultural heritage, the studio seeks to reinterpret traditional techniques through a contemporary lens, fostering a dialogue between local craftsmanship, modern technology, and design.

Where were you born and where are you from?

Mauricio: Buenos Aires, Argentina .
Juan: Buenos Aires, Argentina.

What is your first memory connected to the art world?

Mauricio: My father made lights for cinema and TV; seeing the behind-the-scenes and the work of light, which for me is an art, always captivated me.

Juan: As a child, Antonio Berni’s paintings depicting the history of Argentina always captivated me.

Have you always worked in the art/design field?

Mauricio: Yes, from the beginning of my career, my work has always focused on the design of lighting products. I have also been connected to the world of lighting since childhood through my family’s business.

Juan: I come from the world of advertising, having worked with agencies such as Ogilvy, but I have always remained very close to the world of design.

What led you to design creation?

Mauricio: The need to improve things, the way we live, the things that surround us, the search for beauty in the objects around us.

How would you describe your creative process and its influences?

Mauricio: The creative process always starts with some inspiration, which leads to the search for existing or new materials to shape the new product. At CONTAIN, we always seek to work with local, noble materials and give them a new reinterpretation.

Could you describe a typical day of your work?

Juan: I take care of the client part, sales, advertising, and creative direction at CONTAIN. So, a typical workday usually involves meetings with the sales team, the accounting team, etc., mixed with creative moments where we plan the editorials we are going to do, collaborations with other designers, and photo sessions. Days at CONTAIN are usually quite playful and entertaining.

Why did you choose the specific materials you work with?

Mauricio: The search for simplicity with technical solutions.

What are the technical particularities of your creations?

Mauricio: The search for simplicity with technical solutions.

What advice could you give to beginning artists who would like to create sculptural design works?

Mauricio: Travel a lot, see a lot, be curious.

If your works had to belong to a design movement, how would you define it?

Art Deco.

What designers and artists have influenced you?

Mauricio: I believe no one in particular, but the work of Paavo Tynel seems excellent to me.

What contemporary designers do you appreciate?

Mauricio: I really like the work of Stefan Diez.

What contemporary artists, in any kind of art, have you been inspired by?

I really like the work of Jonas Wood and the photographs of Tony Kelly.

If you had to summarize your creations in one word or sentence, what would it be?

Timeless.
