escapefromsofa

escapefromsofa is an Istanbul-based multidisciplinary design studio founded in 2009, working across architecture, interior and product design. The practice develops residential, hospitality and commercial projects, bringing together contemporary design with a strong sensitivity to context, materiality and craftsmanship. With an approach that balances aesthetics and functionality, the studio creates spaces that are both distinctive and deeply connected to the people who inhabit them.

At the heart of escapefromsofa’s practice is an exploration of natural materials, textures and the relationship between architecture and everyday life. Drawing inspiration from art, nature and its cultural surroundings, the studio combines refined detailing with a thoughtful use of colour, light and form. Through close collaboration with clients and craftspeople, escapefromsofa seeks to create timeless, welcoming environments that reflect the character of each project while offering a meaningful spatial experience.

INTERVIEW

Could you tell us how your journey into interior design started?

Our journey started with a simple interest in how people experience space. We have always seen architecture and interior design as one continuous process, where every decision shapes the way a place is lived.

Do you think there has been a defining moment in your career?

Rather than one defining moment, it has been a gradual process. Every completed project, every client, and every challenge has helped shape the way we think and design.

What do you think is the key to a successful interior design? And in your business in general?

A successful interior feels effortless. It responds to its context, supports everyday life, and remains meaningful over time. As a practice, we value honesty, collaboration, and attention to detail.

How do you start your interior design projects? Do you usually start with a certain element of design or a keyword? And how do they develop?

We always begin by understanding the place and the people who will use it. The concept grows naturally from the site’s character, the client’s lifestyle, and the project’s unique conditions.

How would you define your signature style? Do you have “a mantra” that encapsulates your taste in design?

We don’t aim for a recognizable style. Instead, we try to create spaces with clarity, balance, and a strong sense of place. Every project should feel unique rather than repeat the previous one.

Could you tell us about one of the favorite projects that you worked on?

MANDARIN ORIENTAL 03 is one of our favorite projects. It combines a restrained material palette with carefully framed views, creating a calm dialogue between architecture, interiors, and the surrounding landscape.

What was one of the hardest learned lessons in your journey?

We learned that simplicity requires patience. The most refined solutions often come after removing, not adding.

What was the best advice you have received in your path?

Design for longevity, not for trends. Spaces should remain relevant long after they are completed.

What would be your advice to beginner interior designers?

Stay curious, observe carefully, and spend time understanding materials, construction, and light. Good design comes from knowledge as much as creativity.

Are there any books/podcasts you would like to recommend to our readers?

We often return to books rather than podcasts. Peter Zumthor’s Thinking Architecture and Jun’ichirō Tanizaki’s In Praise of Shadows continue to influence the way we think about atmosphere, materiality, and light.

If you could pick one interior design tip that is important to you, what would it be?

Design with natural light in mind from the very beginning. Light shapes the atmosphere of a space more than any object or material, and it changes beautifully throughout the day.

Finally, what are your upcoming projects? Anything you’d like to share or add to the interview?

We are currently working on several residential, office, and hospitality projects in different locations. Although each project is unique, they all share the same intention: creating calm, enduring spaces that age gracefully.
