“Design with the senses in mind, not just the eyes.”
INTERVIEW
We always begin with the client’s needs, so clear communication is at the heart of our process. From there, we look for a focal point in the space—it could be a statement light, an artwork the client loves, or even a bespoke piece we design specifically for them. More often than not, it’s the custom details that excite us the most—integrating art around a bookcase, designing a built-in bench, or sourcing the perfect fabric to tie it all together.
Mariana: I’ve always been interested in interior design, even from a young age, but my path wasn’t so straightforward. At university, I decided to study industrial design with a focus on furniture. The more I designed furniture, the more I realized I wanted to design the entire space. It wasn’t until I did an internship at an interior design firm that I discovered my passion for interiors. What I love is that my background in furniture design still plays a big role—it fits seamlessly with creating bespoke spaces.
Jenna: I’ve always admired interiors, but my first love was photography and art, which I pursued at university. I even dreamed of becoming an art curator at one point, but I realized what I truly loved was bringing things together and creating beautiful, cohesive spaces. That’s when I decided to give interior design a try. I took a course, and it instantly felt like the perfect fit for me.
A major defining moment for us was meeting each other and deciding to create Interior Fox. From brainstorming our name to navigating challenges, it’s been an incredibly rewarding journey. Standout moments include collaborating with H&M, being featured in publications like Elle Decoration and Forbes, and seeing the joy our clients feel in their transformed homes. These milestones have not only boosted our confidence but also reinforced why we love what we do—transforming spaces and making a meaningful impact on people’s lives.
The key is passion and a genuine connection with our clients. We take the time to get to know them, ensuring we’re the right fit before diving into a project. Clear communication is essential, too—design is a collaborative process, and we want clients to feel comfortable sharing their ideas and feedback. This approach keeps things fun and ensures we create spaces that truly reflect their personalities. It’s also helped us build amazing client relationships—many have turned into lasting friendships.
We love working with patterns and color, but always in a way that feels fresh, considered, and balanced. Our designs are deeply influenced by our travels and the diverse backgrounds of our clients, bringing unique layers and character to every project.
Our mantra? ‘Every Interior Fox design reflects your style, with our signature touch of thoughtful patterns and curated color.’
It’s hard to pick just one because every project feels personal, but the ones that stand out often involve clients who trust us and love collaborating. One favorite project included bespoke elements in almost every room, from custom joinery to furniture.
It challenged us creatively and pushed us to use our full range of skills. We’re excited because it hasn’t been photographed yet, but we know it will be a standout.
Trust your instincts and find your style. It’s easy to get caught up in trends, but the most successful designers stay true to their vision. Build strong client and supplier relationships, too—every interaction becomes part of your brand.
Great design is collaborative, and understanding your clients’ needs is key to creating something truly special.
“Stop cruising in life—keep learning, push through challenges, and surround yourself with people who inspire you.” This advice has shaped our approach to work and creativity. It reminds us to stay curious, embrace change, and always seek out opportunities for growth. Whether it’s improving our craft, refining our brand, or connecting with like-minded people, this mindset has been a game-changer.
Balancing creativity with the realities of running a business—admin, logistics, and strategy—can get challenging. Though one of the hardest lessons was learning that not every project is the right fit, and that’s okay. Early on, we said “yes” to everything, but over time, we realized the importance of working with clients who trust our vision. These projects are not only more enjoyable but also more successful for everyone involved.
Books: The Design of Everyday Things by Don Norman—it makes you rethink the purpose of design in daily life. The Architect’s Pocket Book is also a must-have for quick references and site visits.
Podcasts: How I Built This, Success Leaves Clues, and Diary of a CEO. We also love flipping through design magazines for inspiration—recently, we’ve been enjoying old issues of Architectural Digest from the ’80s and ’90s.
We’re working on an apartment in San Sebastian, Spain at the moment. We love collaborating with international clients and discovering their local suppliers. We’re also working on more bespoke furniture and tailored pieces to our clients.
Thank you so much Mariana and Jenna, for this lovely interview!
