Alter Ego Studio

Alter Ego Studio is a multidisciplinary design practice founded in 2017 by designer Natalia Komarova and led in collaboration with Nuno Gomes. Working across collectible furniture, interiors, 3D design, and visual storytelling, the studio explores the relationship between organic form, materiality, and emotion.

Guided by a philosophy that seeks to imbue furniture with a sense of life and movement, Alter Ego Studio develops pieces characterized by flowing curves, rhythmic compositions, sculptural textures, and asymmetrical forms. Drawing inspiration from nature and its inherent imperfections, the studio creates works that blur the boundaries between functional design and artistic expression.

Interview

Where were you born and where are you from?

I was born in Nizhny Novgorod (central Russia), and now live in Saint Petersburg.

What is your first memory connected to the art world?

My parents enrolled me in art school when I was 4 years old.

Have you always worked in the art/design field?

Yes, but I also have a degree in political science. I was choosing between art and science.

What led you to design creation?

Love for beauty. I think I’ve had this since childhood.

How would you describe your creative process and its influences?

Most of the ideas come to me through insights. The ones I like best, I refine and optimize for production. After it I coordinate technical capabilities with craftsmen, select materials and colors.

Could you describe a typical day of your work?

There is not much creative time in my work process, I would say about 15% of the total work. Much more interaction with clients and partners, manufacturers, and paperwork.

Why did you choose the specific materials you work with?

I work with natural materials because I believe that the most beautiful in the world has already been created by nature.

What are the technical particularities of your creations?

Part of the collection is works with a high level of complexity, so for some models we make small copies for testing, for other models we make prototypes several times.

What advice could you give to beginning artists who would like to create sculptural design works?

Regardless of the direction in design or art, I would advise being honest with yourself, trusting your picture of the world, and believing in your art.

If your works had to belong to a design movement, how would you define it?

I would say it’s a mixture of biomorphism, Japanese minimalism, and glam chic.

What designers and artists have influenced you?

I can’t say that anyone in particular influenced my vision in design, but the most inspiring person in this industry for me is Pierre Paulin.

What contemporary designers do you appreciate?

I really love the work of the studio Apparatus and Christophe Delcourt.

What contemporary artists, in any kind of art, have you been inspired by?

I prefer to be inspired not by creativity but by the path of great personalities from different fields.

If you had to summarize your creations in one word or sentence, what would it be?

Symbiosis.

Is there anything you would like to add?

I would like to wish for creative people to appreciate the process of developing and discovering their talent. It may not be simple, and even dramatic at times, but it still helps us to know ourselves.

“Regardless of the direction in design or art, I would advise to be honest with yourself, trust your picture of the world and believe in your art.”
