    Christian Friedl

    Christian Friedl

Christian Friedl is an Austrian designer and furniture maker based in Styria, whose practice is dedicated to the creation of sculptural furniture conceived as art objects with soul and individuality. His work is guided by the belief that furniture should transcend pure functionality, becoming instead a lasting expression of form, material, and human presence.

Rooted in exquisite craftsmanship and artistic sensibility, Friedl’s pieces explore the dialogue between material integrity, reduced form, and expressive detail. Sustainable materials, their unique origins, and meticulous handcraft lie at the core of his approach, resulting in objects that embody both restraint and emotional depth.

Each creation is refined through a rigorous process until it emerges as a singular, timeless piece. Whether placed within modern or traditional interiors, Friedl’s work finds its natural place in environments shaped by discernment, generosity, and appreciation for enduring design.

    1. Where were you born and where are you from ?

I was born in Feldbach in Styria, in the heart of Austria. I grew up on a small farm surrounded by nature, gentle hills, and a Mediterranean climate, which shaped my connection to nature.

    2. What is your first memory connected to the art world ?

As a child, I found relics of earlier generations on our farm. This old craftsmanship inspired me and led me to creative work.

    3. Have you always worked in the art/design field, and what led you to the design creation ?

After completing my apprenticeship as a wood sculptor, I also trained in interior architecture and object design in Graz. For the past 25 years, I have worked with my clients on exciting projects related to living space design.

    4. What led you to the design creation ?

My intimate relationship with nature and my deep appreciation for materials, along with an inner drive to create and to bring new things to life — something that has been part of me since childhood.

    5. How would you describe your creative process and it influences ?

It ́s an intimate relationship between me, nature, and the forest, which provides me with sustainable and valuable raw materials. Through my consciously reduced and mindful approach to materials, I create sustainable and lasting values for generations to come. This process allows me to refine each piece for as long asd needeed until it becomes a unique work.

    6. Could you describe a typical day of your work ?

A mix of improvisation and intense engagement with the workshop.

    7. Why did you choose the specific materials you work with ?

I prefer working with solid wood, in combination with materials like gold, bronze, copper, brass, aluminium, concrete, natural stone, and leather… Natural materials that carry natural characteristics and growth structures in their DNA. In general, I want to express these emotions with all my senses and through my works.

    8. What are the technical particularities of your creations ?

Solid wood is alive by nature. Influenced by temperature and humidity, it behaves and moves. This has a direct impact on my technical craftsmanship. In the manufacturing process of my creations, I deliberately reduce the use of technology to leave room for real craftsmanship and to let the soul enter the artwork.

    9. What advices could you give to beginning artists who would like to create sculptural design works ?

Never lose faith in yourself and your work.

    10. If your works had to belong to a design movement, in which one would you define it ?

My works are made for generations; it is important to me not to be associated with a specific era.

    11. What designers and artists have influenced you ?

It ́s an intimate relationship between me, nature, and the forest. That ́s my influence and my inspiration.

    12. What contemporary designers do you appreciate ?

There are many… Jasper Morrison, Charles Eames, Arne Jacobsen, etc.

    13. What contemporary artists (in any kind of art) have you been inspired by ?

I value every artist in their own way; I find my inspiration in freedom and in nature.

    14. If you had to summarize your creations in one word or sentence, what would it be ?
