Melis Tatlicibasi

Melis Tatlıçıbasi is a Turkish interior and furniture designer whose practice explores the relationship between sculptural form, craftsmanship, and everyday function. Working through her studio ME.T, she creates collectible furniture and lighting distinguished by clean lines, organic curves, and a refined minimalist aesthetic inspired by architecture and contemporary living. Guided by a passion for material exploration, her work balances expressive forms with timeless simplicity.

Interview

Where were you born and where are you from?

I was born in Moscow, and I am from Turkey.

What is your first memory connected to the art world?

When I met with Galerie Philia, my dreams became real.

Have you always worked in the art/design field?

Yes, I have always been involved in the art field.

What led you to design creation?

My art history teacher in Florence inspired me a lot about the history of design.

How would you describe your creative process and its influences?

When I sleep, in my dreams, the ideas for a lot of my designs come to me. Shapes, colors, nature, animals, dreams, moments, and movie characters.

Could you describe a typical day of your work?

I imagine, dream, and bring shapes together in 3D and sketching.

Why did you choose the specific materials you work with?

I use different materials according to each design. Though natural wood is my preference because there are many good manufacturers.

What are the technical particularities of your creations?

I have no technical particularities; it’s all about inspiration, imagination, creativity, shapes, colors, nature, animals, dreams, and moments. That’s why sometimes we have hard times in the manufacturing process with my manufacturer.

What advice could you give to beginning artists who would like to create sculptural design works?

Passion is the keyword. Be conscious of your passion for art and design.

If your works had to belong to a design movement, how would you define it?

A combination of Memphis and modernism.

What designers and artists have influenced you?

Ettore Sottsass , Alvar Alto, Frank Lloyd Wright, Zaha Hadid.

What contemporary designers do you appreciate?

Mathieu Lehanneur, Kelly Wearstler.

What contemporary artists, in any kind of art, have you been inspired by?

Martin Masse and Mathieu Lehanneur.

If you had to summarize your creations in one word or sentence, what would it be?

My children.
