    5 Picks from PHILIA Collection

Hyungshin Hwang is a Seoul-based designer whose work explores memory, materiality, and structure through furniture and object-making. Rooted in woodworking, his practice articulates everyday experiences and emotional landscapes through a restrained and distinctive formal language. He holds both BFA and MFA degrees in Woodworking and Furniture Design from Hongik University.

His ongoing Layered Series, first introduced at Korea International Art Fair in 2007, remains central to his practice. The series investigates modular construction and layered surface treatments, reflecting the accumulation of time, memory, and lived experience through subtle variations in form and texture.

Hwang’s work has been presented internationally at Milan Design Week, DMY Berlin Design Festival, Design Days Dubai, and Art Beijing, as well as in institutional contexts including La Triennale di Milano and the Korea Craft & Design Foundation. Alongside his studio practice, he has taught at several leading universities in Korea, continuing to shape a body of work defined by a quiet sensitivity to material and form.

“One of the designs that first inspired me to dream of making my own work.”

“A balance between pure construction and form, embracing the material in its raw state.”
