Hyungshin Hwang is a Seoul-based designer whose practice explores the relationship between memory, material, and structure through collectible furniture and objects. Trained in woodworking at Hongik University, where he earned both his BFA and MFA in Woodworking and Furniture Design, Hwang has developed a distinctive design language rooted in refined craftsmanship and thoughtful construction. His work transforms everyday observations into restrained, sculptural forms that balance material honesty with quiet emotional depth.
Best known for his ongoing Layered Series, Hwang investigates accumulation, time, and repetition through modular construction and carefully layered surfaces. Combining traditional woodworking techniques with a contemporary sensibility, his pieces reveal a subtle dialogue between structure and narrative. Exhibited internationally at venues including Milan Design Week, DMY Berlin, Design Days Dubai, and Art Beijing, Hwang’s work reflects a refined balance between Korean craftsmanship and contemporary collectible design.
