Hyungshin Hwang (b. 1981) is a Seoul-based designer whose work explores memory, material, and structure through furniture and object-making. Trained in woodworking at Hongik University, where he received both his BFA and MFA in Woodworking and Furniture Design, Hwang develops restrained forms that translate everyday experiences into a quiet and distinctive formal language. Central to his practice is the ongoing Layered Series, first introduced at KIAF in 2007, which investigates accumulation through modular construction and layered surfaces that evoke the passage of time. Through carefully considered material choices and construction methods, his works reflect a balance between structural clarity and subtle emotional resonance. His pieces have been presented internationally at platforms including Milan Design Week, DMY Berlin Design Festival, Design Days Dubai, and Art Beijing, reflecting a dialogue between contemporary design and traditional craftsmanship.
