ALVA Design is a Brazilian design studio founded in 2012 by siblings Susana Bastos, an artist and fashion designer, and Marcelo Alvarenga, an architect. Bringing together artistic expression and architectural thinking, the studio creates furniture and objects distinguished by their sculptural forms, refined craftsmanship, and strong connection to materiality.
Working primarily with locally sourced soapstone alongside wood, metal, and other natural materials, ALVA Design explores the dialogue between tradition and innovation. Their pieces often combine lathe work with meticulous hand-finishing techniques, resulting in softly contoured forms that celebrate the tactile qualities of each material. Drawing inspiration from Brazilian modernism, nature, and everyday life, the studio develops collections that balance functionality with poetic expression, establishing a distinctive voice within contemporary Brazilian design.
