Roman Šedina (b. 1982) operates at the intersection of art and design, where material, process, and gesture converge. His practice has long centered on the archetypal format of the vessel—most notably monumental, hand-thrown vases and bowls that serve as both object and proposition. Each piece begins with an intensely laborious and physically demanding process, emphasizing the discipline and endurance inherent to traditional ceramic making.

Rather than preserving the vessel in its original state, Šedina deliberately intervenes in its completion. Through acts of deformation, crushing, or controlled breakage, he deconstructs the very form he has painstakingly created. These gestures introduce tension and vulnerability, transforming the vessel into a sculptural statement that challenges ideas of perfection, stability, and function.

His works are further distinguished by striking surface treatments, including metallic glazes developed from his own formulas, which have become a defining element of his visual language. Šedina’s large-scale vessels are held in numerous public and private collections both in the Czech Republic and internationally, and his work has received multiple awards. Exhibited widely in European galleries and museums, his practice also extends into collaborative initiatives, most notably LIFE OF VASE (2017–present), an ongoing art project conceived as an evolving collection developed in dialogue with artists, designers, and other creative voices.
