Roland de Mul is an intuitive artist and designer whose work emerges from a fluid dialogue between imagination and material. Most of his designs originate as mental visions—ideas formed instinctively—while the chosen material completes the final stage of the creative process. At other times, it is the material itself, with its inherent possibilities and constraints, that sparks the initial concept. This reciprocal relationship between thought and matter defines the essence of his practice.

De Mul’s objects are marked by a strong sense of character: bold, assured, and often carrying a distinctly masculine presence. Form is not over-rationalized, but allowed to unfold through intuition, resulting in pieces that feel direct and unapologetic. This approach naturally limits production, as each object demands a precise alignment of idea, material, and moment.

Guided by the belief that “if fantasy could be reality, maybe reality is a fantasy and design an illusion,” de Mul blurs the boundaries between perception and function. His work occupies the space between the tangible and the imagined, inviting reflection on the nature of objects and the realities they propose.

Among his notable designs is Sublight, a piece that encapsulates his philosophy—where intuition, material expression, and conceptual ambiguity converge into a singular, compelling form.
