German designer Sebastian Herkner (b. 1981) is internationally recognized for a body of work that seamlessly unites traditional craftsmanship with technological innovation. Since establishing his studio in Offenbach in 2006, he has created furniture, lighting, and accessories in collaboration with leading design brands including ClassiCon, Moroso, Thonet, and ames. His designs are distinguished by an intuitive use of materials and color, often combining unexpected textures and vibrant hues to produce objects that feel both globally resonant and deeply rooted in place.
Herkner’s longstanding relationship with ames has been shaped by repeated journeys to Colombia alongside the brand’s founder, Ana María. There, he engaged closely with local artisans—from weavers in remote workshops to master potters—observing and participating in techniques passed down through generations. These encounters, along with immersive experiences of Colombia’s landscapes, cities, and daily life, have profoundly influenced the forms and chromatic language of his designs.
Born in Bad Mergentheim, Herkner studied product design at the HfG Offenbach, where he developed a practice centered on cultural exchange, skilled handcraft, and attention to detail. In addition to product design, he is known for interior projects and exhibition design. His contributions have been widely honored, including the iF Award, the Elle Deco International Design Award, and Maison&Objet’s Designer of the Year in 2019.
