Frederic Saulou

Frédéric Saulou (b. 1989) is a French designer based in Rennes whose multidisciplinary practice explores the relationship between material, architecture, and contemporary collectible design. After studying Space and Environmental Design and Object Design, he founded his independent studio in 2013, developing a practice rooted in research, experimentation, and craftsmanship. Treating each creation as a sculptural composition, Saulou investigates the expressive potential of natural and industrial materials through a language defined by simplicity, precision, and material honesty.

Drawing inspiration from slate, ornamental stone, and the post-industrial heritage of mineral materials, Saulou reinterprets traditional craftsmanship through a contemporary lens, transforming familiar materials into sculptural furniture and functional objects. His work explores the dialogue between history and innovation, balancing technical rigor with poetic expression while challenging conventional perceptions of material, function, and permanence. Working closely with local artisans, he continues to develop a practice that bridges craft, architecture, and sculpture through a deeply material-driven approach.
