Born in 1976 in the United Kingdom, Julian Mayor is a British artist and designer based in Doncaster, South Yorkshire. His sculptural practice sits at the intersection of industrial precision and expressive form, merging digital design with the tactility of handcrafted metalwork. Working primarily with welded sheet metal, Mayor transforms computer-generated models into striking three-dimensional forms through cutting, folding, and welding—creating works that balance geometry with organic imperfection.
Mayor earned a BA in Industrial Design from the University of Northumbria (1998) and an MA in Design Products from the Royal College of Art (2000), where he studied under Ron Arad. His early career spanned design consultancy in Northern California and collaborations with leading London studios, including Pentagram and Tom Dixon. This cross-disciplinary experience informs his approach to material innovation, proportion, and spatial narrative.
